Op-Ed Piece: 2nd to None Because of the 2nd
Right now I’m especially reminded why I began 2nd To None. It’s a tribute to the incredibly beautiful lives we Americans lead because we have the 2nd Amendment, and the freedoms it affords us. In other words, the United States is 2nd to none, because of the 2nd Amendment.
My heart is breaking right now for the children, the families, and all of the loved ones affected by the horrific acts of violence in Parkland, Florida. I can’t even begin to imagine what sorrow is left behind, or what void is suddenly created, in the place of where their loved ones used to be. The communities that have banded together are so strong in their solidarity that I’m even more reminded why America - and the greatness of humanity, really - is so remarkable: its love and its strength.
I think our country and its reverence of freedom is a true representation of the human spirit. That freedom should be enabled. Stifling the principle of personal freedom is not only an outright betrayal to that very freedom, but an increasingly present form of tyranny.
Responsible gun owners shouldn’t have their rights infringed even in the wake of unspeakable tragedies such as this, for the actions of those who would never practice decorum or have respect for legal restrictions in the first place.
America is one of the most progressive-thinking societies in the world. I would think that that would mean that most could understand that firearms ownership is a way we exercise our personal freedoms as citizens.
We are granted the right to protect ourselves. Think about how empowering that is. As a woman, I am allowed to do that with a firearm. That’s pretty incredible...and liberal, actually.
We must remember that during times of trial and difficulty, that this is the when we must lean into our ideals. Strength and love will ultimately prevail, and the Second Amendment will be there protecting my ability to live freely. ❤️
