Episode 1: How to Carry Concealed For Women

Episode 1: How to Carry Concealed For Women

Here is my first episode of my carrying on-body challenge!

To catch up any new readers who may not be familiar with the challenge I posed for myself, I challenged myself to carry on-body for 30 days straight.  #NoDaysOff.

Prior to this, I had carried exclusively in my purse so I went into this experiment as a self-proclaimed newbie.

Dressing around a handgun, holster and belt on your body is no simple task at first, so there’s a lot to be said for purse carrying.  (Mainly that it can offer a wider variety of fashion choices on a daily basis!)  However, I also found myself worrying about how quickly I could access my pistol in my purse if necessary, or wondering how much am I really in control of my pistol if it’s just hanging out in a bag (in a holster) that’s just hanging off of me?

Plus, as a woman working in the firearms industry, I am keenly aware of the unique challenges and circumstances that women face while choosing to carry on-body.  As I explain during the first episode, women are shaped differently than men and our clothing tends to be significantly less forgiving.  What works for a man concealing their firearm doesn’t necessarily work for a woman. And vice versa.

I want to understand from my own experience what women go through when they choose to carry on-body. I want to be able to help my readers if they have questions and also become more well-versed in the technical specifics of carrying concealed.

I would also love for this to be a resource for women who are curious about carrying, but perhaps aren’t sure where to start.  There were so many times throughout this whole process when I had questions.  (Almost every day!)  So it’s been my hope throughout these past 30 days that if I make a mistake, or do something embarrassing or wrong, that it only makes the process easier for other women in my shoes down the road.

And maybe, just maybe, it can open up the eyes of some women who would otherwise think concealed carry is a little too intense, or too something for them to consider.

When I casually mentioned to some of my Springfield Armory colleagues that I was imposing a 30-day challenge on myself, they suggested I begin on August 1 to coincide with the release of our new concealed carry pistol, the XD-S Mod.2 9mm.  I jumped at the chance to provide some female-focused content for our latest firearm, but also I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this gun!  I’d been hearing about the specs for months and everyone in the office was so excited for its release.  I needed to try it out.

So I said a very enthusiastic yes.

And here we are!  30 days in and the first episode on deck.

This was so incredibly fun to do, and I learned more than I ever thought I could about carrying in such a short period of time.  It was challenging at times, but it was a worthwhile trade to have peace of mind throughout my day.  I felt prepared, secure, and safe.

Read below for my full account of the first seven days, and to watch the first episode of How To Carry Concealed for Women.  I detail all of my clothing options and holsters below! :)

The second episode will be coming soon!

Day 1

Holster: Armed In Style x Fury Carry Solutions Kydex IWB holster (click the photos below to shop!)

Belt: Python Plus Gun Belt (reinforced) from Concealment Solutions (click the photos below to shop!)

Outfit: Blush tube top, high waisted jeans and platform sandals.  Unfortunately the top I'm wearing is no longer available, so I've rounded up a few options from Revolve, Lulu's and Charlotte Russe to recreate a similar CCW-possible look!  The shoes and jeans are linked below.

Day 2

Holster: Dene Adams Corset Holster in Silver (click the photos below to shop!)

Outfit: Gray tee, jeans and sneakers.

The Vince tee below is probably one of the best investments I've ever made.  I wear it constantly and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've had it for years.  The quality and fit is better than any other t-shirt I've found! Also, if you visit their website you can get 10% off your first purchase by signing up for their email list.

The silver sneakers I'm wearing aren't available anymore, but there's a really similar pair from Steve Madden that just went on sale.  (Click the photos to shop!)

Day 3

Holster: Torsion IWB Kydex Holster from Bravo Concealment (click the photos below to shop!)

Belt: Python Plus Gun Belt (reinforced) from Concealment Solutions (click the photos below to shop!)

Outfit: Jean Shorts, Springfield Armory tee, and sneakers.  I've linked below to a similar Springfield Armory tee since the one I'm wearing in the episode was event-specific, and I also linked to another great loose rocker tee that creates a similar look!  (Click the photos below to shop!)

Day 4

Holster: Grab 'N Go IWB Holster with UltiClip from Huckleberry Tactical (click the photos below to shop!)

Belt: Python Plus Gun Belt (reinforced) from Concealment Solutions, and the Wild Fable Belt in Black from Target.  Although I did link to the Target belt below, please keep in mind that it was way too flimsy to stand up to the weight of the firearm.  It's a great belt for style purposes, but I don't recommend this for concealed carry (click the photos below to shop!)

Outfit:  Leopard print shorts (temporarily!) and then jean shorts, the Springfield Armory Sturgis tee and sneakers.

The leopard print shorts are sold out on ASOS but are available on Poshmark.  (That's actually where I got mine!)  I also linked to a similar pair from Topshop.

The Springfield Armory Sturgis tee isn't available for sale on the store yet (but I'm told it will be soon) so in the meantime, I'm linking to a cute, boxy top from Target.  (Click the photos below to shop!)

Day 5

Holster: Alexo Athletica Signature Pants (click the photos below to shop!)

Outfit:  Alexo Athletica leggings, Springfield Armory polo and sneakers (click the photos below to shop!)

Day 6

Holster: Blacksmith Tactical Micro Rig IWB Holster (click the photos below to shop!)

Outfit: Violet Springfield Armory tee, jeans and sneakers (click the photos below to shop!)

Day 7

Holster: N/A because of the travel day!

Outfit: Yoga pants, gray tee (the same Vince tee from Day 2!), sneakers and my favorite Springfield Armory hat
